Velcro Gloves For The Little Ones

For years I’ve used exfoliating gloves for students to attach small, velcro backed Bible story pictures to.  They work great for pre-k and up but are a little too fussy for the little ones.  Just putting the gloves on a small hand is a challenge and then attaching the pieces…well, it just doesn’t work very well.  When the execution of an activity takes too much time or is frustrating for the student, the lesson to be learned gets lost in the struggle.

One day, while perusing the stores in Wilburton, OK (for RJ Stevens Singing School) I saw these large mitts.  They easily allow the hook side of velcro to attach itself to them.  They are big and roomy enough for mommy’s hand to fit inside.  They are stiff enough that baby can easily slide his hand in as well.   I grabbed what they had on the shelf and waited until I taught the baby class again to try them out.

In March 2021 I began teaching the Mommy and Me class.  I pulled out these giant mitts and put them to use.  When the babies were younger, mommy wore the mitt and baby put the pictures on.  It worked great.  As the babies have become more independent, they can put the pictures on and put the mitt on by themselves (with a little help from mommy).

Each time we change our lesson box, we get a new set of pictures to put on our velcro mitts.  This activity doesn’t take a lot of time but it gives the students the opportunity to see and talk about and touch the Bible story one more time.  Each opportunity they get to interact with the story is a good thing.

Supplies needed are a mitt for each child and 4 or 5 pictures, with velcro attached to the back, preferably laminated, that relate to the Bible story.   If the pictures are not too big, they will store inside the glove for next time.  The sun in this set is too big for that.  Lesson learned.  This is our Creation set.

The students reach inside the gloves to get the pictures and then place them on their mitt.

After they are done making their beautiful picture on their mitt, they can wear it while we sing or talk about it.  Aren’t these little guys the cutest?  They frequently give me these looks like I’m some kind of crazy woman.

This is another set of pictures we used while studying about Noah.
