A Song Of Ascent (PPT Slides)

The songs of ascent would have been sung on the way up to Jerusalem either to celebrate the festivals or possibly as the remnant returned from captivity.  Portions of the verses in this hymn were taken from the songs of ascent found in the Psalms 120-134.  The chorus is written as if a small group start out on the journey and as they get closer to Jerusalem are joined by more and more people who, as they fall in with the others, join in the song.  Our lives are much the same.  We begin our journey towards our goal of eternity in heaven and as the years go by we are joined by more and more Christians who join in the song encouraging each other as we go.

A Song of Ascent

Verse 1:

We cry aloud, “Lord, hear our plea!” We raise our eyes up high; (Psalm 120)
Our help comes from the Holy One who made the earth and sky. (Psalm 124)
He blesses all who fear His name and walk His narrow way. (Psalm 128)
“O God, You do great things for us. We praise you ev’ry day.” (Psalm 126)

Verse 2:

Protecting us from midday heat and darkness in the night, (Psalm 121)
He never slumbers, never sleeps; He is our constant light. (Psalm 121)
At times distressed, at times at ease, we wait upon the Lord. (Psalm 130)
He blesses us with restful sleep, our fortitude restored. (Psalm 127)

Verse 3:

Our hearts are glad; our tongues are filled with laughter and with song. (Psalm 126)
In unity we journey singing praises all day long. (Psalm 133)
As we march on have mercy Lord and guide us lest we fall. (Psalm 123)
To lean upon Your strong right arm brings comfort to us all. (Psalm 121)

Chorus:

As ancients sang together in the days of long ago,
We lift our weary spirits singing praises as we go.
Ascending up the mountain as we journey fervently,
Our burdens lightened as we pair our words with harmony.
