Listen to Samuel.

Samuel

There was a boy named Samuel. He was a sleep in bed.
There was a boy named Samuel. He did what Eli said.

“Samuel, Oh, Samuel.”
“Here I am Eli.”
“I did not call you. Go back to bed.”

“Samuel, Oh, Samuel.”
“Here I am Eli.”
“I did not call you. Go back to bed.”

“Samuel, Oh, Samuel.”
“Here I am Eli.”
“I did not call you. It must be the Lord.
If it happens once again, here’s what you must say,
“‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears You..”

There was a boy named Samuel. He was a sleep in bed.
There was a boy named Samuel. He did what Eli said.

“Samuel, Oh, Samuel.”
“‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears You.”

This song has had some revisions.  The music below and the mp3 may be slightly different than the words above.
After putting this song online, I got an email from Marilyn Alexander offering an additional verse that I think fits beautifully. Here it is:

“There is a girl/boy named ________;
[S]he listens to God’s Word.
For in the Holy Bible
Is where God’s voice is heard.
__________ [insert child’s name], O _____________
{Student answers} ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears You.'”

  1. I used this song for VBS, when we had the story of Samuel. After getting the hang of it, the kids loved it! They wanted to do it over and over. I staged it as a little play, with kids doing the parts of Eli, Samuel, and the Lord. They all wanted to try the parts, especially Eli. Thank you for this delightful teaching aid!

    • Thank you, Lacy, for sharing how you used the song. I’m so glad the kids enjoyed it.

  2. This is my next lesson, I will be singing your song. How delightful!

Thank you for taking the time to comment.
