King Solomon

We’ll be studying about King Solomon for the month of March. There will be a total of 8 lessons. Solomon was a fascinating man. His wealth and wisdom is amazing to read about. I hope I can get this across to the little ones.

We will use a flip chart about Solomon. The pictures for my flip charts come from The Beginner’s Bible Card Collection (at the time I’m writing this, these are out of print. They can sometimes be found on Ebay. Grab them up if you see them). It is well worth the investment. I also use the Beginner’s Bible Card Collections for the magnetic puzzles, song time line, and anything else I can think of.

Attendance Chart — Our attendance chart this month is a cloth pouch. Each class session they will put a “gold coin” in their pouch. By the end of the month, they should be rich.

Let the kids choose a pillow and sit down on the floor.

Pass out a card from the Song Time line to each child. Let them put them in order, singing the songs as we go. On a side note, I have put the Gideon song online at my website. You can print it off and hear it sung. Gideon — Take a look and let me know what you think.

“Trust and Obey” flip chart. This flip chart is to help teach the song by the same name. It is really for lessons with Saul, but they really like it, so we’ll keep using it for a while.

Solomon Lesson 2

Tonight we will have our second lesson on Solomon. I have an activity that will be added to each week. Using different Proverbs and coloring pictures that illustrate the Proverbs, each child will have a set of cards with the colored picture and Proverbs beneath it. These are stored in a library pocket (actually its larger than a library pocket). Then, the kids will color their own picture to take home. We will add to these cards each Wednesday night in the month of March.

I also made the attendance bags. These are cloth bags with elastic at the top. Each week they will get a coin to put in their pouch. This is to emphasize that Solomon was very rich.

Solomon Lesson 3

Well, this is a first. I’m getting my lesson plan ready early Saturday afternoon.

While I’m thinking about it, I thought I would talk about the Wednesday PM Proverbs activity. Each Wed PM we will learn a new Proverb that Solomon wrote. I chose 4 that I thought would be easy for the kids and relevant to their lives. I then chose 4 application pictures that represented the Proverbs. The pictures were taken from the Thru-The-Bible Coloring Pages.

Each week I let the children color the picture we are talking about. I cropped the picture (in Print Master), taking off the caption on the picture, and added the Proverbs we were using in its place.

Before class, I colored the picture, scanned it into Print Master, took off the caption and added the Proverbs we were using. I then reduced the size of the picture to where 4 of them could fit on one page. Then I printed it out on card stock.

These cards are what go into the library pocket (actually, you need to make a larger pocket — or smaller pictures) I talked about in the previous lesson plan. Each week, we add the current picture to the pocket. Then we review the Proverbs. At the end of the month, they will get to take these pockets w/cards home.

Solomon Lesson 4

We are already half way through our study of Solomon. That means I really need to get ready for next month. We will be studying Josiah. He’s such a fascinating king, only 8 years old when he began and was considered a very good king. But, we’ll get into that later. (Actually we never studied Josiah, we went on to study the prophets)

Tonight we will add another Proverbs card to the pockets we started last Wed PM. We will also do the coloring page associated with that card. Since it doesn’t matter which order we do them in, I’ll decide when I get to class which one to do.

Solomon Lesson 5

I’ve been teaching this class for the past 5 1/2 months. I have written a song for each lesson. I’ve finally gotten the songs online. You can view all the songs at the “songs” tab above. When you click on the one that interests you, you will see a link to an mp3 file. Sorry the vocal isn’t any better than it is. It’s just me singing here in my kitchen.

Below the mp3 file link is the lyrics. Below the lyrics is a jpg of the sheet music. This link will open a new window. You should be able to get a fairly good printout of the music. I would love to hear what you think.

This will be a great time to introduce the new flip chart. This flip chart discusses how writing was done in Bible times. The pictures came from The Beginner’s Bible cards from Scholastic (Out of print). I wrote the script. I’m using this flip chart because we have been talking about the different wise sayings Solomon wrote.

Solomon Lesson 7

Wednesday night’s class was kind of wild. I know Wednesday nights are hard on everyone. Some of the kids have been at daycare all day and would probably rather be at home, others have been at home all day and are all keyed up to be around everyone else. And then there’s the problem of the teacher not always being on top of things. Wednesday night was a combination of all the above.

After I wrote the lesson plan for Wednesday, I remembered that I was wanting to read When I’m a Mommy (I can’t remember the author right now). So we did that. The book takes Proverbs 31 and puts it into words kids understand. It is written in the 1st person — a little girl wanting to be the best mommy. We’ll read it again tomorrow. Then, Wednesday night read the companion book — When I’m a Daddy. This one doesn’t use any of Solomon’s writings, it comes mostly from the New Testament. The premise is the same, so I think it will be a good time to read it to the kids.

When we were doing our Proverbs Pocket, we learned the Proverb — Even a child is known by his doings. One of the kids had learned it in pre-school/daycare. He was so excited to learn it in Bible class also.

Sing Whatever I Will Be When I Grow Up. This is a great song. I have several career hats the kids get to wear. When we talk about their “career”, they get to stand up. We also sing the verses If I should be a mommy/daddy when I grow up.

Solomon Lesson 8

Tonight is our final night to study Solomon. We’ve spent the past 3 months on the kings — Saul, David and Solomon. It is time now to move on to the prophets. Next week we will begin studying Elijah, Daniel and Jonah. I’ve had my dear friends feverishly helping me get the material ready for Elijah. But, for now, I’ve got to give Solomon a grand send off.

Tonight we will learn our last Proverb for our Proverb Pocket. The kids will get to take their Proverb Pockets home. They will also get to take their money pouch attendance charts home. We’ll read from the book When I’m a Daddy after we sing “Whatever I Will Be When I Grow Up”. It should be a fun class.

Read When I’m a Daddy. This book is similar to When I’m A Mommy. It takes passages from the Bible that tell a daddy what to do. A little boy talks about what a good daddy he’ll be someday.
