Typically, we teach each subject (Gideon, Samson, Saul, etc) for a month. Saul and David are an exception. Saul was taught for 2 weeks and David was taught for 6 weeks. Some of the subjects were taught in more than one class session so there will more than one lesson plan for those. Just keep scrolling down the page to see them all.

  • David Is Anointed King
  • David and Goliath
  • David and Jonathan
  • Finally Some Pictures
  • David Becomes King
  • King David Book
  • David and Mephibosheth
  • Wall Decorations

David is Anointed King

Tomorrow we have our first lesson on David. There will be a total of 5 separate lessons, but there will be 10 class sessions. The lessons will be:

  • David Is Anointed King
  • David Plays for Saul
  • David and Goliath
  • David and Jonathan
  • David Becomes King

I finally have the classroom decorated for David. I’ll try to get pictures of it sometime this week.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

Read Shepherd Flip Chart . This is a flip chart that will give the kids some idea of what daily life was like for the shepherd.

The Lord’s My Shepherd flip chart. This flip chart will help the kids learn the song from our hymnal. We will just do the first verse.

Magnetic Puzzle of David and Goliath. We aren’t covering Goliath yet, but the kids love doing these puzzles. It will just have to do.

Sing: David

David Flip Read Chart. This flip chart covers all of David’s life that I intend to cover in class. I may just use half of it this week. We’ll have to see how the kids attention spans are.

Attendance charts — crowns — We’re using the same crowns we did for Saul. The kids need more chances to put lots of star on the crowns.

Move to Storytime area (floor)with Bibles — Call each child one at a time and place a pillow on the floor where that child is to sit. After he/she is seated, call the next child up.

I don’t have the flannel graph ready for David yet. So, we’ll use our song timeline (pictures of characters we’ve studied with their songs on the back). This will be a good time to review and sing the new song David again.

Return to seats. They like to sing the God Made The Little Frog and The Little Mouse song before they sit down. They can get kind of loud. We’ll see how it goes.

“Trust and Obey” flip chart. This flip chart is to help teach the song by the same name. It is really for lessons with Saul, but they really like it, so we’ll keep using it for a while.

Sing: Let the kids choose their favorite songs to sing.

David is Anointed King Lesson 2

Tonight’s lesson will concentrate on the fact that David was a shepherd. I’ve taught Palma Smiley’s To Toddlers With Lovelesson on David for years. I have a box full of great stuff. I finally got a chance to look in it and see what I could use with the older kids. There were a few things in there that will be great and a couple of things that I’ve been saving to use with kids this age.My lesson plan is:

Sing:
This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

One of the things I found in my toddler David box were shepherd’s hats. I can’t describe them here, but I’ll try to get a picture of it with the kids. I’ll wear one at the beginning of class and encourage any of the kids that want to to wear one.

Read Shepherd Flip Chart. This is a flip chart that will give the kids some idea of what daily life was like for the shepherd.

Use wooden blocks to make sheepfold. There are enough toy lions for each child to have one. There is just one toy bear. Let the kids act out a how a shepherd protects his sheep.

Sing: David

Return to seats.

We will begin making a shepherd book tonight. The first page opening has a pocket to put a pipe cleaner “David” in. There are outlines of 4 sheep that the kids will glue cotton balls on top of. For the next 2-3 Wednesday nights we will be adding to this book.

“Trust and Obey” flip chart. This flip chart is to help teach the song by the same name. It is really for lessons with Saul, but they really like it, so we’ll keep using it for a while.

David is Anointed King Lesson 3

I’ve got some great friends that are helping behind the scenes with this class. They help me put together the Magnetic puzzles, take homes and anything else I can think of for them to do. This week, one of them made little shepherd’s hats like I mentioned in the last lesson. Another made some wooden harps that I strung with rubber bands. The kids will love these tomorrow morning. Both of these items are intended to be kept in our David box. They will not go home with the kids.We had a visitor Wednesday night. He was a cutie. They’ve recently moved into town, so we’ll probably be seeing more of him. If all my students come at the same time (it doesn’t happen often), I’ll have 8. That’s a handful.

My lesson plan is:

Sing: This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

One of the things I found in my toddler David box were shepherd’s hats. I can’t describe them here, but I’ll try to get a picture of it with the kids. I’ll wear one at the beginning of class and encourage any of the kids that want to to wear one. I couldn’t get anyone to wear one Wednesday night, maybe they will today.

They really enjoyed this Wednesday night. I built the sheepfold. I told them that they could help me next time if they wore a shepherd’s hat. We’ll see how bad they want to do it.

Pass out Wooden Harps. Talk to them about how shepherds (David) used them to pass the time. Emphasize that David sang songs of praise to God. Let them hold them during the next activity.

The Lord’s My Shepherd flip chart. This flip chart will help the kids learn the song from our hymnal. We will just do the first verse.

Take the harps back up and put away.

Magnetic Figures of David the shepherd, warrior and king. These are figures I got from Soul-ly For Kids. It gives me the chance to give a brief overview of David’s life. There is also a 2-part Goliath in the bags. They will enjoy putting him together.

Sing: David

David Flip Read Chart. This flip chart covers all of David’s life that I intend to cover in class. I went ahead and read the whole flip chart Wednesday night. Sunday AM is usually when I have a full class. That may limit how much I get to read.

David and Goliath Lesson 1

Tomorrow we get to finally talk about Goliath. We will spend 3 class sessions on him. This is such an easy lesson to teach because there is so much stuff out there to help and it is such an exciting story.

In addition to what we’ve used so far, we have a few new activities to enjoy. We bought a plastic armor set during the after Halloween sales. I’ll let each of the kids try it on. Maybe not all in one class, but a few at a time.

I finally finished the flannel graph pictures to where I can use them easily. We made Goliath Magnetic puzzles for each child. I’ll be using Karyn Henley’s Snip’n’Tell for Goliath.

My lesson plan is

Sing:
This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

I actually had a few kids wear the shepherd’s hats last week. I think I’ll probably have more participation this week. Hopefully I’ll remember the camera and have pictures to share.

Magnetic David and Goliath Puzzle.

Sing: David

David Flip Read Chart. I will need to read up to and including the Goliath part of the flip chart.

Attendance charts — crowns — We’re using the same crowns we did for Saul. The kids need more chances to put lots of star on the crowns. While the kids are working on this (they are very artistic about the star placement), sing We Want A King.

Move to Storytime area (floor)with Bibles — Call each child one at a time and place a pillow on the floor where that child is to sit. After he/she is seated, call the next child up.

Flannel graphs are up and ready to go. This is very involved this time. There are 5 complete scene changes, and a lot of people involved. I will probably just do David’s anointing and David and Goliath tomorrow.

While we’re on the floor would be a good time to let a few of them try on the armor. Depending on how many kids I have and their energy level, I may let them throw plastic rocks (from my kids Flisher Price castle set) at the Goliath on the wall.

Return to seats.

If there is time do Karyn Henley’s Snip-n-Tell.

“Trust and Obey” flip chart. This flip chart is to help teach the song by the same name. It is really for lessons with Saul, but they really like it, so we’ll keep using it for a while.

David and Goliath Lesson 2

Sunday’s lesson was lots of fun. It was made even funner (if that’s a word) by the presence of a few visitors. My dear friend, Nell Webber, and her 2 great grandchildren were visiting, and I got them in my class. What a joy.

The Armor was a big hit. I was just able to let one try it on — we were pressed for time. As I was getting on the little boy, I heard one of the 2 visitors lean over to his great grandmother and say, “I’m scared”. I promised him no one would get hurt.

We used the Goliath magnetic puzzles for the first time. Lesson learned: put a border around the puzzle. I’ve been scanning the picture into Print Master and putting a solid colored border around it. To save time, I just enlarged the picture at the copier and made the puzzles. Well, apparently, the kids really use the border as a guide to tell them where the pieces go. I will always add a border from now on.

We’re going to add to the David booklet we started 2 Wed PMs ago. Tonight, The kids will add eyes to a lion. The lion’s mouth opens when the book opens, shuts when it shuts. I glued this page to the Shepherd page.

Due to the extra people and extra activities and lack of time, I forgot to do the attendance charts Sun AM. None of the kids said anything, so we’ll just forget about it. I do need to do it tonight.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

Attendance charts — crowns — We’re using the same crowns we did for Saul. The kids need more chances to put lots of star on the crowns. While the kids are working on this (they are very artistic about the star placement), sing We Want A King.

The shepherd’s hats are a big hit. I took the camera Sun AM, but for some reason (I think batteries) it wouldn’t work. I’ll try again tonight.

They really enjoy this.

Sing: David

Pass out David Booklets and review what we learned about shepherds and let them add eyes to the lion. Take up and save until next Wed PM.

David and Goliath Lesson 3

Tomorrow morning will be our last official lesson on Goliath. We will, of course, review him each week, but the main focus will be on other parts of David’s life.Well, I got very brave and let them throw the plastic rocks at the Goliath on the wall. They really enjoyed it. I’m sure they’ll beg to do it again in the morning.

I’ve added one other thing to our list of David/Goliath activities. A friend made enough cloth pouches for each child. I bought some river rocks. I’ll pour them out on the floor and let the kids choose 5 to put in their pouoh. This is to emphasize that David didn’t wear a bunch of armor and carried only his slingshot and 5 stones. We should probably do this before we throw the plastic rock at Goliath, or they’ll hurl their real stones at him.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

Attendance charts — crowns — I will let the kids take these home today. We’ll come up with another attendance chart for the rest of the quarter.

The shepherd’s hats are a big hit. I took the camera Sun AM, but for some reason (I think batteries) it wouldn’t work. I’ll try again tonight.

Read Shepherd Flip Chart. This is a flip chart that will give the kids some idea of what daily life was like for the shepherd.

David and Jonathan Lesson 1

Tonight we will learn about David and Jonathan. In addition to the other class activities we have used for David, we will add David and Jonathan magnetic puzzle and David and Jonathan flannel graph boxes. These flannel graph boxes are school pencil boxes with a piece of flannel glued inside the lid. The pieces that are to be used are stored in the box. Each child has their own set. They are able to tell the story using their own flannel graph board and pieces. This is a great activity for this age.I sent the attendance charts home Sunday morning. They loved them. We stapled an extra piece of foam to the crowns to fit the child’s head. They all wore them with great pride. I haven’t had time to do another attendance chart. Maybe with all the new activities they won’t miss it.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

The activities involving the shepherd’s hat, flip chart, etc will be used as time allows.

David and Jonathan Lesson 2

Tomorrow morning we will learn more abuot David and Jonathan. Wednesday PM was our first lesson with Jonathan as a main character. We will do basically the same activities.

I found the flannel graph challenging Wednesday night. There are major scene changes. It has never been my favorite way to tell the story because I hadn’t been very practised at it. The kids love it though. They seem mesmerized by the gorgeous flannels and the different scenery involved. I only have time to use them on Wed, because our classes are about 10 minutes longer.

I had an adult visitor in class Wednesday. She is a newly married young lady that visits with us on occasion. She didn’t want to sit alone in the auditorium, her husband wasn’t there, and her mother in-law is my helper. I enjoyed having her in class. She seemed to have a good time too.

Well, enough of that, I need to get my lesson plan ready so I won’t be lost in the morning.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

The activities involving the shepherd’s hat, flip chart, etc will be used as time allows. I will probably leave the activities for Wed PM also, due to time. I do want to continue doing the harps each class. This gives us a chance to sing “The Lord’s My Shepherd”.

Magnetic David and Jonathan Puzzle.

Sing: David

David Flip Read Chart. I will probably read the entire flip chart from now on. The parts I haven’t read include David becoming king, David and Mephibosheth and David’s advice to Solomon.

Move to Storytime area (floor. The kids have gotten accustomed to doing this. I’m able to just ask them to quietly move to the floor with their pillows and they do so.

Do the activity with the pouches and rocks.

While we’re on the floor would be a good time to let a few of them try on the armor.

Depending on how many kids I have and their energy level, I may let them throw plastic rocks (from my kids Fisher Price castle set) at the Goliath on the wall. This activity has been very well received. They don’t get out of hand like I was afraid they would. Last Sunday AM one of the little guys hit Goliath right between the eyes. The plastic rock came back and hit the little boy right between the eyes. These rocks are so light they can’t hurt a thing, but we all got a good laugh out of it.

Return to seats.

David and Jonathan mini flannel graph boxes. These are pencil boxes with a piece of flannel glued to the inside of the lid. Each child has there own. The pieces for the story are stored in the boxes. Each child can put their own flannel graph story together. This one has a picture of King Saul, Jonathan, David and a heart. The heart is to be placed between David and Jonathan to show their love for each other.

Magnetic David and Jonathan sharing activity. This activity actually came from To Toddlers With Love. It was in my box for the toddlers, but the older ones will enjoy it also.

“Trust and Obey” flip chart. This flip chart is to help teach the song by the same name. It is really for lessons with Saul, but they really like it, so we’ll keep using it for a while.

Finally Some Pictures

I finally got the camera to work in Bible class Sunday AM. It was going great and then it said the memory card was full. I couldn’t remember how to delete some pictures, so I just have 2 pictures to show you.I’ve been talking about the shepherd’s hats and wooden harps. Here’s a picture of one of my little shepherd’s demonstrating it for you.

David the Shepherd

Here is my only little girl in class showing off the king’s crown attendance chart.

David the King

I hope there’ll be more pictures soon.

David Becomes King

Tonight’s lesson will be the first official lesson on David becoming king. We will finish our David book we’ve been working on. They will get to take it home.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

Magnetic David Pictures — We used these the first couple of lessons. There is a picture of David the Shepherd, David the Warrior and David the King. This will serve as a review of past lessons and an introduction to David becoming king.

Sing: <a href=”David

David Flip Read Chart. Read entire flip chart.

Move to Storytime area (floor. The kids have gotten accustomed to doing this. I’m able to just ask them to quietly move to the floor with their pillows and they do so.

David Flannel Graph — This will be the first time we do all 5 scene changes. It covers David being anointed, David and Goliath, David threatened by Saul, David and Jonathan and David becomes King.

Do the activity with the pouches and rocks.

While we’re on the floor would be a good time to let a few of them try on the armor.

Depending on how many kids I have and their energy level, I may let them throw plastic rocks (from my kids Fisher Price castle set) at the Goliath on the wall.

King David Book

We’ve been working on a pop-up book about David. Here are pictures of each page for you to see:

King David Book Cover

This is the cover. It is made out of a foam sheet. The kids glued the crown to the cover.

King David Book Shepherd

The first page is about David the shepherd. The kids glued cotton balls to outlines of sheep. They got to choose a pipe cleaner “David” to put in the pocket.

King David Book Lion

The second page is of a lion. His mouth opens and shuts. The kids glued googly eyes to the lion. This should help remind them how God took David when he killed a lion that was bothering his sheep. Instructions for the “talking mouth” lion came from Joan Irvine’s book How To Make Pop-ups.

King David Book Goliath

The 3rd page is a pop-up Goliath. He has a sword/spear that has a magnet attached. There is a magnet on the paper to help keep it in place. Instructions for making a pop-up like Goliath can be found in Joan Irvine’s How To Make Pop-Up book.

King David Book King

The last page is of David the king. His crown is a paper spring that is glued at both ends. It folds up when the book is closed. The paper spring crown can also be found in Joan Irvine’s How To Make Pop-Up book.

David and Mephibosheth

This will be our last lesson on David. We will concentrate on David’s promise to Jonathan. He kept his promise and took care of Mephibosheth. In case you don’t remember, Mephibosheth was crippled when he was 5 years old. This is a great lesson about keeping your promises and taking care of those in need.

Several years ago, I found a great bargain at our local Wal-mart. They put some Fisher Price toys on clearance. Each toy had a doctor, friend and person in a wheel chair. I bought a bunch of them. I’ve used them with Palma Smiley’s To Toddlers With Love — The Good Samaritan. I will use them tomorrow to talk about helping people who are handicapped.

My lesson plan is:

Sing:

This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

Since this is our last lesson about David, we really should do the Shepherd’s Hats and Sheep Fold.

Magnetic David Pictures — We used these the first couple of lessons. There is a picture of David the Shepherd, David the Warrior and David the King. This will serve as a review of past lessons and an introduction to David becoming king.

Sing: David

David Flip Read Chart. Read entire flip chart.

Fisher Price handicapped kids toys. These are the ones mentioned above. There should be enough sets for each child. They’ll get time to play with them while we discuss helping handicapped people.

Move to Storytime area (floor. The kids have gotten accustomed to doing this. I’m able to just ask them to quietly move to the floor with their pillows and they do so.

Do the activity with the pouches and rocks.

I think everyone that wanted to has tried on the armor. If not, we’ll let them try it on.

Depending on how many kids I have and their energy level, I may let them throw plastic rocks (from my kids Fisher Price castle set) at the Goliath on the wall.

Return to seats.

David Decorating Walls

These pictures are of the wall decorations. We kept them up for David and Solomon. The pictures came from various sources. The pictures were copied on clear acetate and blown up on the overhead to the size they needed to be. Then they were traced on bulletin board paper, cut out and stapled to the wall.

Hi! These are fantastic lessons, and I’m just curious how you do the mini flannel graph boxes for each student. (Sorry if you’ve explained this in another post!) I am guessing that you have (laminated?) pictures of the story characters with either felt or velcro on the back rather than the professionally made versions of flannel graph. Is that correct?
Also, I would love love love to see the Trust and Obey flip chart. Could you possibly take pictures of what your pages look like? I’m working on preparing things for our toddler and preschooler classes, and I’d love for these ages to learn more hymns.
