The Tongue

One of our lessons while studying Proverbs we concentrated on various passages that talked about the tongue.  While preparing for the lesson, I kept envisioning an activity with a tongue sticking out.  This is the final result.  Jonathan, my 11 year old, enjoyed this because he got to draw the faces for me.  I’ve always wanted an artist at my fingertips to draw whatever I needed for class.  Maybe he will be the one.

Once the activity is put together, the student can pull the tongues out.  There are 8 little cards that describes various ways of using your tongue.  The student will decide if it describes a happy face or a mad face.  Then the student will glue the cards on the tongues they go with.

This activity can be used alone and sent home at the end of class or can be added to the Books of Poetry Project Folder.

I really appreciate all your cute crafts!! I have used several. Is there any way that you could send me an editable version on the tongue pdf? I would love to put the words onto the tongue before I print them, but it requires a password to do that. If you don’t want to do that, I understand, but it would be helpful.

I usually put instructions with the pdf. I don’t know why this one slipped by without it. Print 1st page using flesh toned paper. Cut a slit in the lips with an xacto blade. Fold paper in half top to bottom and then in half again so the faces are on the inside. Print the second paper on red paper. Slip the tip of the tongue through the slit so it is sticking out of the mouth. Glue the 3 edges together making sure the tongue does not get caught in the glue. The tongue should slide up and down easily. Hope that helps.

Very difficult to find a good craft for James 3:1-12 about the tongue. I am going to use this craft for that lesson. Thank you for sharing.

I’m going to tweak this a little bit. I have a book with faces to use on paper bags. I’m going to use the girl and boy and use your tongue idea. I’ll copy the cover and put on the back of the bag with the Bible verse.

Used this activity today for my children’s church class and it went fabulous! The kiddos were motivated to participate and they loved it. They liked pulling the tongues out and it’s a great hand-on project :) The positive/negatives ways to use your tongue really sealed the deal and helped the kids to visualize this concept. Thank you greatly for blessing us with this free material :) God bless you and may He continue to use you in wonderful ways!

Thanks! I was looking for a lesson about the tongue for preschoolers and wanted a long tongue craft. I did my own drawings, but am using your ideas! Thank you so much.

I used this Tongue project in my class yesterday to go along with the story of the Tower of Babel. It ended up being a perfect project for it. The kids all enjoyed putting it together and seemed to better grasp the meaning I was hoping for them to leave with–to use their tongues wisely, giving praise to God, etc. Thanks again for sharing your ideas!
