Bulletin boards (or whole wall decorations) are powerful teaching tools. They offer the first impression a student has when entering a classroom. They suggest to the student, their parents, and others who peek their heads in whether or not there is fresh interesting teaching going on during class. They can teach a lesson even if the student’s mind is wandering from the lesson being taught.

What makes a great bulletin board? Bible teaching! Keep it all about God and His teachings. There’s so many biblical teachings that can be illustrated on a bulletin board. Don’t waste valuable wall space with frivolous decorations.

Cutesy bulletin boards may look impressive but their teaching value is very low and can even detract from the teaching you are trying to accomplish. Making a play on words is understood by adults and older students but the only thing a young student sees is a cute bulletin board. Some examples:

How much better it would be to fill the walls in bible class with scripture and appropriate pictures to accompany them like this one used in an elementary class.

Some suggestions for making bulletin boards:

Keep it simple.  A cluttered bulletin board is too distracting.  Unless it is for a teen or adult class and is in a location where there will be time to really look at it (a hall or foyer), the bulletin board should be simple enough that the message is easily understood with a brief look from across the room.  Lots of words or small pictures are too hard to read unless the person can read and is able to get close enough to it.

Bright contrasting colors.  Bright colors will attract attention, contrasting colors are easy to see.  The background should usually be light so the pictures and words will stand out.  If using a black or dark blue background, the words should be pastel or florescent and very simple.

Pictures from similar source.  It can be difficult to find appropriate pictures to use on a bulletin board.  Try to keep pictures similar.  Using pictures from the same coloring book or from the same publisher or of the same style will keep the bulletin board uniform looking and easier to understand.

Keep it fresh. Changing the bulletin board occasionally can be time consuming but is important. You can see it in the students’ eyes the excitement they feel entering a class that has new bulletin boards. It helps the teachers’ morale as well. There’s something special about new beginnings and initiating these new beginnings — whether it is a new quarter, a new lesson or a promotion to a new class — with new wall decorations makes it that much more special.
