The Church Begins — Project Folder

by | Jul 5, 2013 | Project Folders | 4 comments

This is a project folder my 4th-6th grade students used while studying the first half of the books of Acts. You will find the lesson plans used during that quarter here: The Church Begins. I assembled the project folders ahead of time but you could have the students add to it as you go if you would like. Each of the activities in the project folder go along with the centers described in the lesson plans. PDFs are included for each section of the project folder.

Project Folder Tutorial

The Church project folder will encourage the students to memorize passages about worship, salvation, the mission of the church and the organization of the church. It also encourages them to memorize what happens in each chapter of Acts, at each city of Paul’s first two journeys and his sermon to the Athenians about the Unknown God.

Front and Back Covers PDF You’ll have to come up with your own pictures for the front cover.

First Opening

Open the cover to see the first opening of the project folder.

These two activities help the students memorize what happened in each of the chapters of Acts. This quarter they memorize chapters 1-14. The rest will be memorized next quarter.
Acts Chapters 1-14 PDF

Small pictures of the Acts Cards will be glued on the front of the flap for each chapter. Inside the flap the student writes what happened in that chapter and draws a picture of the event or events.

The center activities will help the students learn passages that teach about the worship and salvation.

Lift each flap and copy the verse that talks about that particular part of our worship.
Worship PDF

Same as above. Lift the flap and copy the verse that talks about that particular step of salvation.
Salvation PDF

The right side of the first opening teaches about the mission and the organization of the church.

Open the tri-fold booklet to see the 3 different works of the church. Mission of the Church PDF

Lift each flap and copy the verse that describes that particular aspect of the church’s work.

Similar to the above activity, this is a tri-fold booklet.

Open the booklet to see the 3 different parts of the organization of the church. Lift the flap to copy down the verse. You would want to use pictures of your elders, deacons and saints to make the booklet more personal.

2nd Opening

Lift the center flaps to see the 2nd opening of the project folder.

The left hand flap is about Paul’s 1st missionary journey.

The top booklet opens up to a map of Paul’s 1st journey. This is for reference when completing the activity below.

The goal is for the students to be able to tell at least one thing that happened in each city Paul visited. Lift each flap and record what happened in that city.

The right flap is just like the left but it is about Paul’s 2nd missionary journey.

A map of the 2nd journey.

Lift the flaps to record what happened in each city.

This is what the 2nd opening looks like with the maps open.

The center of the 2nd opening is the longest passage the students are to memorize. This is the sermon Paul preached in Athens about the Unknown God. I love this passage and think it is so important for all of us to commit to memory. Other activities we have used to aid in memorizing Paul’s Sermon.
The Unknown God PDF

Lift the flaps and copy the passage. By copying the passage, the students are better able to memorize it.

A small timeline of important events in the first part of Acts.
The Church Timeline PDF

Timeline opens up to let students glue small pictures in the order they happened.

The students read the gospels in the previous 2 quarters. During this and the next quarter they were expected to read the rest of the New Testament. I encouraged them to read it on their own instead of depending on their parents doing it with them. This bookmark lets them know when they are expected to read what.

The Memory Booklet is to be taken home and used during the week for review of the passages we were memorizing. It is a lot of material so having it in one place helps keep it manageable.
MemoryBooklets, Bookmarks, Schedule PDF

I wanted all the students to memorize from the same version of the Bible so when we worked on it in class there was not confusion about the slight difference in versions. I used NKJV.

Many of the students would carry their memory booklets in their Bible so they would have it handy during class and at home. Others put it on their fridge or other prominent place at home.

There is a pocket behind the Unknown God passage for storing the memory booklet, bookmark and other items that might need to be stored.

The back of the project folder is for recording progress. There is a chart the students can put stickers on to record their Bible reading. There is also a place to put stickers to record what passages were memorized. Some students memorized it all. Others just some. I was happy with any amount of memory work as long as they were making an effort during the quarter.
