Dinah Zike’s Foldables

I’ve been a fan of Dinah Zike’s for years. The project folders I have on this site were inspired by her foldables. I was able to attend one of her seminars several years ago. She was fascinating to listen to. If you ever get the chance, take it.

She introduced me to the term “dividing the data”. I had been doing this and most teachers do this to some degree but I did not have a name to go with it. “Dividing the data” is breaking any material you are wanting to teach into logical, small chunks. Like a book that is divided into chapters. Like creating a list or sequence of events to help learn a topic. We do this in Bible study all the time. The Bible itself is broken down into books, chapters and verses. We create lists of the kings, the judges, the 10 commandments. We sequence the life of Christ or events in the story of the flood, etc.

Dinah Zike’s foldables offer a way to present this data that is “hands-on” as opposed to a worksheet. My students have always loved to manipulate the foldables. With just regular copy paper, scissors and maybe some glue, the students can be guided into creating an activity that helps them remember what they learned and is something they want to keep.

Most of the project folders I have shared with you have links to pdf files of projects I have already created. While these may be handy, they may not be exactly what you’re wanting. Wouldn’t it be great to have the basic instructions so you could make your own foldables? That’s why I’m writing this today. Here is what you’ve been waiting for: Dinah Zike’s Foldables.

Be sure to check out the foldables I have shared on this site: Category: Foldables  and the Project Folders they are part of: Category: Project Folders
