Feed the Bot

Here’s another Pinterest idea combined with an idea from a wonderful Bible class teacher friend of mine, Aleta. She asks her students to bring a question to class every week to ask their fellow students. I’ve been wanting to implement this in my class for some time but I knew that I would need to do something more than must tell them to bring a question to class. When I saw this idea on Pinterest, I knew it was the answer to bringing Aleta’s suggestion into my classroom.

I made card pockets using a template on Pinterest. I took the template and customized it to my needs. PDF for my card pocket template. Template was printed on cardstock and cards were cut out of cardstock to match the color of the pocket. Each student has a different color pocket/cards. There is a magnet on the back of the pockets so they can be kept on their fridge at home. Each class session they are supposed to write a question on one side of a card and the answer on the other side. They bring the question to class and we use it as a review for our lessons. I color coded the cards so we could see without making a big deal about it, which kids were bringing their cards. I’ve been really proud of them. They bring their questions to class which means they are getting the lesson read before they come.

We have named our question/answer contraption “feed the bot”. They called it a Flip Chute on Pinterest but my 9 year old thought of a robot so that’s what we’ve got. I followed the instructions as written but for some reason the cards got hung up as they were coming out so I made one with a slight variation. I made the opening at bottom flush with the bottom of the container so the cards slide right out. To make it symmetrical, the top opening is flush with the top but it doesn’t have to be. The first pictures below are of the first bot I made. It looks a little more like a robot with its white and metallic duct tape.

Ignore the fact that I left off the last word on this card pocket. It should be “bot”.

Here is the new and improved version. It doesn’t look so much like a robot but it sure does work better. We’ll keep calling it our bot until we come up with something better.
